Right now, the browser looks identical to Safari. Somewhat disappointing considering Safari itself looks rather outdated compared to many other Apple apps. Safari (and Orion) both use lots of edges and squared off corners which don't follow any of Apple's modern apps. It looks barely different than it did since MacOS Yosemite which came out 8 years ago.

Even Apple acknowledged and tried to modernize the design with MacOS Monterey and its compact tabs, but it fell short because it delineated too much from the expected UX of a browser. Instead, Safari now has a hodge-podge of rounded corners and squared off corners in an attempt to keep the old tab design with Apple's newer visual design language. It was rushed in response to massive negative feedback and it shows.

I would like to see Orion try to implement more a better, cleaner visual design rather than emulating the failed Safari redesign from Apple.

Orion isn't emulating Safari, but just follows appleshuman interface guidelines which basically suggests them to look like that. what exactly needs to be changed? where are there lots of edges and squared corners?

lumin8 in a sense Orion is a safari replacment, so as a new user, I expect it to look like safari but be supercharged which it exactly is. This is my perspective and the reason I use Orion at least; I like the minimal look of safari but dislike the telemetry and lack of proper extensions.

lumin8 We appreciate your view. The way this sites works is people are suggesting concrete feature requests. So please document with screenshots and/or mockup exactly what would you like to change.

Otherwise the request is akin to saying 'please create the best browser'. We are already doing the best we can, including UI. If you want something changed you should document your request better.

There is a reason Apple walked back on the controversial redesign. The rounded tabs were a regression in both form and function. Not only did it look ugly, the extra padding reduced the number of tabs visible on screen and the length of page title on each tab. It also had many quirks with active/hover states.

I’m pretty satisfied with the design of Orion thus far but I agree that the mobile version still needs a lot of work (or even a redesign). If you want to see a change, make specific suggestion posts with actionable titles like “Round the corners in tabs overview”. The Orion team will get to it eventually if there is interest.

lumin8 Please make concrete suggestions and I suggest using one post per suggestion.

There seems to be apple to oranges comparison regarding tabs in tab gallery.

On Orion iOS they are rounded (like Safari). On Orion Desktop they are square (again like Safari). You've shown image comparing Safari iOS and Orion desktop.

Vlad That is my point, on Orion Desktop they are square. Why? Why is Orion emulating desktop Safari down to a T when its visual language conflicts with practically the rest of the entire operating system? It doesn't make sense to emulate Apple's design oversights. Apple has updated almost all system applications to be visually similar to iOS apps (rounded corners) but didn't do so for desktop Safari (well they did for a few weeks, until they reverted it)

lumin8 I understand. I am guiding you how to make your suggestions in a way that rest of the community can upvote them.

Vlad Iv looked at Orion a few times and thought the same thing about the UI as lumin8. I understand that you need concrete ideas to actually implement; however it's unrealistic to ask bug reporters to design an interface for you.
I think what lumin8 is really saying is that Orion would benefit from a total UI overhaul if you want to match the premium mac aesthetic you are aiming for. Thats something that only a great professional UI design team could accomplish! Im not sure how big your team is (or if its just you making this) however it would be worth bringing in some dedicated designers who are interested in creating a great new UI that goes beyond emulating Apple.

Melon It is unrealistic to ask us to design an interface that you can not describe.

We already designed Orion the best we can. What you call emualting Apple is simply following HIG, which is created by the best paid professional design team on the planet, the one working for Apple.

Vlad "unrealistic to ask us to design an interface that you can not describe" Design is not something that is thought up and described in a bug report; it's a slow iterative process that takes place over a long period of time and requires a cohesive vision.

Im not diminishing your work on Orion, I think its hugely impressive; I am trying to help it to grow even more and become better. Apples design team has created just one vision of a browser, and it's not necessarily the best or the most appropriate vision for this project.

My suggestion is that the design could be improved by having some enthusiastic dedicated designers work on the project. It's your project, you can consider that suggestion or ignore it; I wish you the best of luck regardless 🙂

Melon We already have an "enthusiastic dedicated designer" working on the project. If you want to help, best is to make concrete suggestions.
