I have the same problem I hope there will come a fix for this. I just tried with no script extension I just finished with presetting and then I went back into options and then all settings where back in default mode. But it doesn't change this is my main browser and I really like it.
Do you by chance have compatibility mode enabled for the site you're on? Compatibility mode disables extensions.
I think "greying out" the icons a bit, and adding a little tool-tip that explains what's up would be enough
We have a tooltip here.
I am not sure that graying extensions icons would help as some extensions have already grey icons. Other ideas?
My suggestion for this would be to change the colour of the address field if Compatibility Mode is enabled.
I think more "compat" mode awareness is nice, but what I'm concerned about is the confusion of a normal-looking icon of the extension as I'm used to it not behaving in the way I'm used to it.

If you change the saturation, and decrease the brightness of the icon as well as adding a background to the icon, and then offer a pop-up on click, I think that's more than enough.
What do the Apple UX guideines say about disabled buttons actually?
We will disable extension icons as a solution
Looks good, thanks! Ant chance to add a tool-tip with something like "Disabled due to Compatibility Mode"?
I use this but it doesn't changes my browser
If this extension does not work then update you web browser and check that this extension is working.
When in compatibility mode or when an extension is denied, there is no indication on that extension icon that it is denied access
I keep forgetting which sites I have on Compatibility mode, and am trying to click Dark Reader or Bitwarden or whatever and just nothing happens.
Suggest that the icons are somehow styled to indicate that the extension is disabled on the site of the current tab. Perhaps when hovering the cursor, the cursor is or similar, and/or its background colour doesn't change. Something like this.
