Gnome is a pretty fantastic experience on touchscreen devices due to the amount of gestures available. However, browsing the web has always been quite a bit of a pain for various reasons:
- Small close buttons
- Tab bars taking up large amounts of space on higher scaled displays
- A Linux exclusive, the lack of attention any other browser has had to the "drag tab outside window to spawn new window" gesture breaking during their Wayland transitions
The Tab Overview feature seems like a very natural solution to these issues, given that it adds just a few touches:
- Ability to move tabs to a new window by dragging outside the window bounds
- Ability to close tabs via dragging to a "trash" drop target
#1 already works when using a mouse (er, well, it opens the new window but does not move the tab to that window, which I'm assuming is a bug), however when using touch the tabs are clamped to the overview page.
To assist with performing the gesture while a window is maximized, it may also be useful to highlight the inner padded region and define moving the tab outside of that to be what creates a new window.
For #2, the "New Tab" button could be replaced with a "Close Tab" target, as it serves no other purpose while the tab move is taking place.
