Private Browsing Address Bar is Indistinguishable from Normal Browsing

Since the Liquid Glass update in version 1.4.18, the address bar is no longer tinted in Private Browsing mode. The only indicator is a small icon replacing the website icon.

This attached image is a comparison of an older version 1.4.9 (orange) with the newest 1.4.18 (purple) in light mode.

The issue also applies to dark mode.

The address bar should be black or dark grey in private browsing.

You'll be happy to know that this is the main feedback we've received for this new Liquid Glass TestFlight version, and we plan on working on improving this before shipping these changes to the App Store.

We'll update this thread when we make progress.

Hi, I’m glad to see there was an improvement with the latest 1.4.19 on TestFlight. I hate to be picky but there is still a bit of an issue: the private address bar is darker in light mode, but it’s lighter in dark mode. You can see in the attached image.

I really preferred the solid black tint that Safari uses and which Orion previously used on version 1.4.9 for example.

There’s also an issue that when you’re typing into the address field, normal and private modes are identical. Previous versions like 1.4.9 kept the address bar tinted black when typing.

You're right, it's still not as obvious as it used to be on older versions. The truth is, with the "Liquid Glass" design language there's less "solid material" to show a hard tint, so it's hard to find a good way to differentiate between dark/light mode, dark/light web content and standard/private browsing mode. All these permutations are now closer in look and feel, and there's a higher chance some of them will look similar.

I'll keep this ticket opene, as we'll still keep iterating on this to find something better.

Here’s a picture that might demonstrate the problem in dark mode better. Private and normal browsing feel like they’re reversed.
