I tried right clicking on icons and doing some of the actions that were proposed (show notification, move to overflow menu, etc.). Apart from the Use mini toolbar, none of them seems to work. 
Depends on the action. For the move to overflow menu, I was expecting the icon to disappear and move to the arrow menu on the right of the icons.
