Youtube pauses when switching between tabs or switching virtual desktop

Music will stop if I change tab from Youtube music. This happens after I upgraded to latest Tahoe (as in 27 December 2025), and after that, orion prompted to update also.

Normal functionality
I can play youtube music in one tab and multitask in other tab.

Hey @Pandu!
How consistently are you able to reproduce this issue? To clarify, I know it happened to me once on the latest version, but I haven't found a way to consistently reproduce it. Most of the time, I am able to switch tabs, and the YouTube video keeps playing as expected.

I have merged a couple of similar issues into one. Based on the descriptions of the issue, some people are experiencing it far more frequently than others. I haven't been able to find consistent steps for reproducing the issue yet. Please share any further information or observations you may have.

I know for me. Often when I put YouTube Music on, it will pause as soon as I switch tabs or put the computer to sleep with the Touch ID button. It should allow me to hit that and keep playing. However, I can just hit the play button on the keyboard and it will start back up.

Start a YouTube video (a long video, but that may not be important).
The video ends.
Click the YouTube logo in the top-left corner.
Pick another video and start watching.
After some time, the MacBook dims the display, then goes to sleep and pauses the video.

If, after the display becomes dimmer, I refresh the YouTube page and continue watching the same video, the bug does not repeat.

This issue appears to be a regression in WebKit. The team hopes to ship a fix in the next release.

I don't know if the same issue but it started to happened to me today. One thing I noticed is the sound icon does not appear in the Youtube Tab that is playing, when I changed to another tab after two seconds the video play stops and the PiP window does not appear.

For me was easy as disabled AdGuard for Youtube and keep only Orion internal ad block.

Of course something had changed but I can say what.

I'm having this issue on both Youtube and Floatplane (havn't tested other sites). When the issue happens the speaker icon in the tab isn't showing, the laptop will go to sleep while playing, and switching tab the video pauses. However just refreshing the tab and playing the video seems to fix it currently (icon returns, no issue with sleep, contines when switching tabs).
