Searching with the Cantonese, Traditional - Phonetic keyboard on iOS and iPadOS is weird

Whenever I try to search using the Cantonese, Traditional - Phonetic keyboard, the first 2-3 characters would be ignored before the keyboard finally kicks back in and words get recognised again. This is only an issue on the search bar of Orion (iOS/iPadOS). It’s fine everywhere else in the browser. This has been an issue for the past half a year plus but I’ve only gotten to reporting it now.

For the Cantonese words to be recognised from the first character instead of the 2nd or 3rd

I have been unable to reproduce this issue In my testing, but I'm not familiar with Cantonese input methods, so I may be misunderstsanding some key details. When I tried, the Cantonese suggestions appeared after the first letter. I am wondering if in your case the suggestions are hindered by the URL autocomplete?

See in my screen capture, whn I start typing the first s, I see Cantonese suggestions right away, however when I start typing ens, it first tries to autocomplete en.wikipedia.org.

Please let me know if there's more information that would help me better understand the issue?

Hi!

I actually suspected the same thing as I was typing this post, but didn’t know how to express it without it being even more confusing.

You are absolutely right that the autocomplete seems to be hindering the typing process. But it is still an issue that happens with Cantonese phonetic only, I use the Mandarin Pinyin and Japanese Romaji keyboard, both also phonetic keyboards and neither has the same issue.

Interesting you say this. We do disable autocomplete for keyboards related to Japanese and Mandarin languages(ja and zh language codes). Perhaps adding Cantonese to the list of languages not receiving autocomplete would help with your issue?

That would make sense as they all have the same method of inputting and any effort to autocomplete before an actual character pops up wouldn’t really help 🙂

I've worked on the fix as discussed. We'll update this thread when it ships.
