Safari has a feature that if you install a website as an app (PWA), it will show a badge app icon with unread count (see screenshot). This is a core feature of having sites installed as apps, for anything that involves communication, to see unread messages.
Users who use installed apps need to see unread count, for example on webmail apps, or chat apps. Safari implements this, as well as other browsers like Chrome/Brave.
