Steps to reproduce

In Orion, tap the tabs button on the toolbar.
Tap the New Tab button.
In the address/search bar, type some text, then press enter.

Expected behavior

The search bar clearly displays input, and subsequent page displays on screen.

Observed behavior

The search bar has a distracting overlay and subsequent web page does not display

Workaround

Before submitting a search/address, tap the Close button at the top of the screen until it disappears, then try again.

After submitting a search/address, tap the Close button at the top of the screen.

Hi AJBlue98, thank you for taking the time to report this bug!

I am currently working on these views with the intent to improve animations fluidity and solve all these little ugly glitches. It's a low level effort that takes time, so although I can't tell you exactly when this will be fixed, I can tell you that I'm on it!

Great find! Thank you for the report. I am baffled by how I hadn't run into this earlier.
Curiously I don't have the graphical bug where the "Search or enter website" isn't hidden when the user types something.

Huh, that’s weird! I’ve been experiencing this bug for quite a while but only really took the time to look for a workaround recently (which finally gave enough context to file this report).

Glad you were able to reproduce some of it at least!

I did some further testing and I think I figured out the culprit and a workaround.
The bug is caused by Settings → Tabs → Show Keyboard on New Tab
I was not able to reproduce this bug if I disabled that setting. Could you see if that is the case for you as well, @AJBlue98?

That gets rid of the overlay ... But then sometimes when I swipe the address bar to create a new tab, the new tab is missing its address bar, lol

I’ve done a bit more testing. With “show keyboard on new tab“ turned off, there’s still a little graphical bug with the address bar when opening a new tab. It might hint at what's going on. You can see it just before the 8 second mark in this video:

When ‘Show keyboard on new tab’ is enabled, there appear to be two address bars on top of each other.

It happens consistently when doing the following:

Open the tab switcher
Click “+”
Start typing

There’ll be a placeholder behind your text that doesn’t disappear. And after losing focus, you can see the contours of the field behind the main url field, slightly offset to it.

It happens with both tab styles, Grid or Sidebar.
Toggling ‘Tabs start from Bottom’ makes no difference.
Toggling ‘Show full URL’ makes no difference.

Disabling ‘Show keyboard on new tab’ solves it right away (but I don’t prefer that).

A single field with text, not another one visible behind it.
