  • Infinite Reload/Redirect on Instagram or Google OAuth Redirects when I have Vertical Tabs + 2 Windows.

I stumbled upon this when I tried to:

  • View Stories on Instagram, while having two Orion windows open.
  • Do Google OAuth for ChatGPT, while having two Orion windows open.

To Reproduce

  1. Make sure you have these Settings:

  2. Tab Layout: Vertical Tabs (as far as I've tested, the issue doesn't happen with Standard/Compact tabs)

  3. Have a Persistent Window (i.e. an Orion window that isn't a default, that's persisted across Browser Windows)

  4. Open Instagram (on that persistent Window), or it can be any site that sends you a 300 redirection response (like with Google OAuth).

  5. View a friend's story. Result: No infinite redirects. ✅

  6. Now do ⌘ + N (to open a new window)

  7. View. a friend's story again.

    • Result: Infinite redirects. 💀
    • Expected: No infinite redirects.

Desired functionality

The Desired functionality is the infinite redirect just doesn't happen.

This actually doesn't happen on Arc at all. It seamlessly does it. I just realized it might be a hard problem because maybe there's a race condition between the 302 redirects?

Arc has exactly the same features of opening the same tab across two "Windows" in the same "Space". Btw I can see how the definitions for "Window" and "Space" might get confusing so I'll just say:

  • Window (Arc) - Browser Window (Orion)
  • Space (Arc) - Window (the thing that groups a bunch of tabs under it) (Orion)

Current Workaround

Only open those sites that have infinite reloads in "Temporary Window" tab groups. Since two browser windows don't have the same Temporary Window groups:

    Two more examples of infinite reload that have happened to me in the past 15 minutes (both in the same window with 83 Tabs, if that is relevant):

    1) I was reading a blog, which linked to https://bash-org-archive.com/?3630 I right-clicked, selected "Open in New Tab", and the resulting tab immediately went into a really bizarre infinite-redirect loop, with the parameters changing randomly each time. Open opening a clean tab in a different window, pasting the URL directly, it opened fine and I found that the page had a "Prove you are human" CAPTCHA -- once I clicked that, the problem went away.

    2) When I first went to report this (in the original window), I selected Help -> Orion Feedback. When I pressed the "Report a Bug" button, that went into an infinite loop (nothing visible except that the page-load indicator underneath the URL kept restarting), which was a bit startling. When I went back to the other window, opened a clean tab, said Help -> Orion Feedback, and pressed "Report a Bug", it worked fine.

    Not sure what the commonality here is, but it feels like there probably is one. I've seen a few other instances of these infinite loops in the past few days (and had not previously), so I think it is somehow related to one of the recent updates.
