When doing web dev or front-end testing (and just general everyday use), it's nice to be able to see the current webpage's URL path at a glance without having to make the URL bar active... and also while keeping the display as uncluttered as possible. I also happen to work with DNS directly so I like having the domain name as the main emphasis.
For the "show full website address" option under Browsing preferences:
Except for protocols other than http
or https
, I think it's reasonable to just remove the http[s]://
before the domain when the URL bar is inactive. Having a lock icon to the left is already a widespread and commonly understood (at least if not for its technical basis) indication that distinguishes between encrypted and unencrypted website connections. Since it's a form vs function preference though, adding this as an additional third option choice would make sense.
This is how Chrome does it by default:
Unencrypted lock side note
Seems like Orion just hides the lock icon for http websites. As someone technically knowledgable to know what it means, I personally like that as a design choice, but for most people I think some sort of alternative indicator for plain http
sites should probably be visible.
