When trying to install an extension (either via Chrome store or Firefox store), the download immediately fails and the extension is not installed.
The xpi or crx files are immediately listed as failed.

Able to install extensions without the downloads immediately failing.

Hi Stunned9852, thank you for taking the time to report this bug!

I have not been able to reproduce this bug on 1.3.18 (6). I have been able to install extensions from the Chrome web store.

However I know of 2 issues that could cause what you describe. Those issues will be fixed in an upcoming release, in the meantime, could you double check 2 seettings:

    • "Chrome Extensions" and/or "Firefox Extensions" are enabled under "Settings → Advanced"?
    • "Downloads folder" under "Settings → General" is set to a folder you have full access to, not on iCloud?

Let me know how you go!

Thank you for your help in making Orion a better browser!

jeanetienne This is definitely broken broadly speaking as I also have the problem too. In my case it’s because my files app is protected with Face ID.

Hi team I’d also like to add to this. I also get the same error when trying to install on the latest Test Flight version. 1.3.20 (1) (WebKit 8620.2.4.10.8)
3rd party extensions are turned on in settings and downloads is set to a regular folder.
On previous versions I was able to install extensions (last time I tried was the public release) and the download worked as expected then.

But now, alas, every extension I try is not working

lucasyvas, the FaceID protection that is an interesting point. How did you determine this was the cause of the issue? I have been trying to reproduce by setting "Require Face ID" at the OS level (from the Home screen), but I can still install extensions.

rogue You say updating the app broke the install extensions flow for you? None of your settings have changed in teh meantime? Is it possible you have run out of storage on your device?

Thank you so much to all of you for your time in helping narrow down this issue!

jeanetienne I was totally wrong. It stopped working again shortly after disabling Face ID on it. The timing seems to be of pure coincidence. So it still doesn’t work for me and I get the new dialog saying there’s an error installing it as mentioned in a previous post.

It definitely broke a few updates ago but I couldn’t say which. I have a ton of storage space and changed no settings.

Yes the extensions flow is broken. Totally replicable, I can do a screen recording for you showing it, happens every extension I try.
Chrome or Firefox, doesn’t matter. Both are enabled in settings.

No I have 300gb free on my phone haha

EDIT: just tested on the latest 1.3.20 (2) (WebKit 8620.2.4.10.8)
            Still broken.

Possible Fix: set the Downloads folder again, to “On your iPad/Downloads”

That is, the default Downloads folder.

Hi Nya, thanks for mentioning this. Today I was working on another part of the app and noticed that the way we manage the path to the download folder could become "stale" (file/folder bookmarks).

One possible temporary solution, as you mentioned could be to change the downloads folder to something, then back to a destination under "On your iPhone/iPad".

Please let me know if this fixes for you all that have trouble with extensions, this could help put me on track to a fix.

Thank you all for your help!

yep, unsetting, and re-setting the directory works.

lucasyvas Do you mean it breaks again shortly after installing an extension?

rogue could you let me know how long this "fix" survives? This could indicate me if the issue persists, or if it was an issue with an older build that had somehow "corrupted" the Downloads folder setting?

Again, thank you all for following up and being patient while I investigate this issue.

I had the same issue and changing to the default downloads folder fixed the issue. I changed it back to my usual folder (icloud drive) and it seems to still be fixed.

It’s broken again - not sure when. Maybe a reboot, or the update to iOS 18.4. It definitely comes back though. Selecting the Downloads folder again fixes it.

                      a month later

I think I could finally reproduce and found a fix.
This may land in a release some time next month.

Thank you all for your patience and helping making Orion a better browser!
